General Information — ข้อมูลทั่วไป
Baan Sammi (บ้านแซมมี) is the name of a property (predominantly residential). It comprises two parts:
🔹 Baan Sammi Nature Retreat (บ้านแซมมี เนเจอร์รีทรีต บ้านให้เช่า), a house rental business run by Khun Sam, and the former
🔹 Bambusetum Baan Sammi (สวนไผ่บ้านแซมมี), a non-commercial bamboo enterprise managed by Khun Dieter.
Baan Sammi Nature Retreat comprises four rental houses in a natural setting, as well as the former Bambusetum, which has now been transformed into a garden where bamboo is an integral part of the property.
The former Bambusetum Baan Sammi was a small botanical garden featuring a living bamboo collection, with approximately 400 bamboo species prior to 2022. This collection has now been reduced to fewer than 50. The site was closed to the public in September 2025. Visits are still possible, but only by appointment. Visitors are still offered to receive pre-cut bamboo culms, harvest bamboo culms themselves, and dig out bamboo plants grown in the garden, all free of charge. Please note that no sale, shipping, or delivery is offered. Nevertheless, the following activities will continue:
🔹 Bamboo culms from species grown on the grounds of Baan Sammi will be harvested on unspecified dates. Once a sufficient quantity of culms has accumulated, they will be advertised and offered free of charge. Ads for these will be posted on Khun Sam's Facebook page
as well as in 20 to 70 Facebook groups for Chiang Mai.
🔹 Botanists and horticulturists with a deep interest in the Bambusoideae are still warmly invited to visit the remains of the Bambusetum Baan Sammi by prior appointment; at least 5 days' notice is required. Should you require bamboo samples or specimens, please feel free to collect them.Should visitors wish to purchase bamboo plants (plants, culms, seeds), they are welcome to do so from Mr. Thammarat of the commercial bamboo nursery Boonthammee Bamboo Garden (Boonthammee Co., Ltd.), Hang Dong, Chiang Mai. Mr. Thammarat offers nationwide and international delivery of bamboo. Please note that bamboo plants due for shipment must be prepared for domestic transportation or international delivery.
Another option for buying bamboo plants is the Kham Thiang Market in Chiang Mai. A selection of useful bamboo species, potted in small PVC bags, is available from a shop located at coordinates 18.806658, 98.995720. Ornamental bamboo in larger sizes is offered at various shops situated within about 200 m around 18.805859, 98.998978.

Identifying Bamboo Species Based on Vegetative Characteristics
To identify bamboo species yourself, it is essential (1) to observe a mature or nearly mature plant throughout its entire growing season, (2) to provide a detailed description (Bibliography: Item #1159) of the characteristics of the various plant components (habit, rhizome, young shoots, culm, internode, node, branch bud, branching type, culm-leaf, foliage-leaf), (3) to describe site-relevant facts (coordinates, altitude, associated flora), (4) to try to find out the origin of cultivated bamboos, and (5) to take photographs, especially close-ups (Bibliography: Item #1314), of the most important characteristics (e.g., fresh culm leaves). Based on all these details, the descriptions and photos can be compared with those in Bamboos of Thailand (link below). If they match close to 100%, the probability of a correct identification is high.
